Facilities

SASY has thrown the traditional school classroom aesthetic out the window.

Our school is open plan, modern, and furnished to feel welcoming and safe for our students. Our design choices promote independence and agency in our students, encouraging them to take charge of their learning journey down to where they sit, proximity to others, and if they choose a couch or chair.

Something as simple as breaking the negative associations with set seating and tables and chairs facing the front of the classroom is the first step to better engagement with our students.

We have purposely designed a school that doesn't 'feel like one' - when young people come to SASY, it is a fresh start.

A day at SASY

At SASY, we follow our own Rhythm.

SASY's version of a timetable, the Rhythm allows our young people to engage in programs that balance structure and flexibility, with learning and wellbeing deeply interwoven across every part of the day. Rhythms can be tailored to individuals depending on needs.

Rock Up: A Safe Start

Each morning begins with warmth, nourishment, and connection. Young people settle into the day through calm routines and shared meals.

  • Fresh, free breakfast available

  • Time to land, feel seen, and reconnect

  • Familiar routines that build safety and belonging

Switch On: Starting with Connection and Learning

Our ON session builds Hub culture, strengthens relationships, and gently activates learning. Core literacy, numeracy, and project-based activities are embedded in this time.

  • Check-ins, group conversations, and creative tasks

  • Learning that sparks curiosity and builds confidence

  • Opportunities to practice essential skills in supported, engaging ways

Join In: Deep Learning and Exploration

The IN session is when young people dive deeper. It’s a focused space for collaborative ACARA projects, SACE-aligned units, and personalised learning pathways.

  • Hands-on, inquiry-based learning tied to our Holistic Learning Areas

  • Individual learning programs that reflect young people’s interests and goals

  • Spaces supported by multidisciplinary teams working side by side

  • Opportunities to reflect, solve problems, and grow capacity

Stretch Out: Learning Beyond the Hub

In the OUT session, young people connect with peers across the school and explore their place in the broader community. This is still core learning, it just looks a little different.

  • Programs, excursions, and community-based learning

  • Curriculum aligned learning could include: beach science, dog training, bike-riding, or street art

  • Real-world skill building, teamwork, and opportunities leadership

  • Space to try new things and step out with support

Every Day is Different: But the Support is Consistent

Learning happens across the whole day at SASY, not just in traditional lessons. Young people are supported to grow at their own pace through healthy routines, positive relationships, and meaningful engagement.

  • Integrated wellbeing and learning

  • Multidisciplinary teams in every Hub

  • Personalised approaches

  • A focus on safety, agency, and purpose

Student stories

If I was to meet a young person who was struggling with the stress of school, and they were looking for other options, I would recommend SASY without a doubt.

— Kellcie, 2020

Life before SASY was a lot.

I was brought to SASY by my case worker and was told that I’d be out of there in a year. Clearly that didn't go to plan. And why? Because staff cared more than I thought.

If it wasn't for SASY I wouldn't be where I am right now.

— Pagan, 2020

When I started at SASY I was thinking about my future, but I wasn't motivated, it was only a dream. But now I have an open mind about my goals and future with basketball, nutrition, and fitness.

I feel like I have more opportunities here at SASY than other schools and I can focus on what I want to do.

Everything seems pretty achievable now rather than a dream.

— Wil, 2024

SASY helped me reconnect with school, I made some really good friends. I love the fitness and sport options that this school offers, and I also enjoy the food that Zach cooks for us all.

I have noticed that my wellbeing has improved. I enjoy coming to school, I want to come to school even when I am sick!

I love the programs that are on offer, they are so interactive and fun, they are really good. And schoolwork here doesn't feel like a chore, and I am really looked after.

— SASY Student, 2024

The sense of community is what keeps me at SASY. It is going to sound really corny, but it doesn't feel like a school, it feels like a family.

— Immi, 2023

At primary school I felt lost and disconnected. I often avoided going because I didn't have good relationships with the staff, which made me feel misunderstood and unsupported.

Everything changed when I joined SASY.

The staff here are incredibly understanding and patient. They took the time to get to know me and helped me achieve my goals, including obtaining the SACE points needed to complete my Cert III in Stable Hand. The staff members at SASY respect and trust my thoughts and feelings. I can confidently confide in them, knowing I will not be judged. This has made a world of difference in my life.
